One of my favorite songs says “streams of mercies never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.” Hidden inside this phrase is a profound claim about God’s love. In times of trial, God’s mercies feel like a river flowing under, over and all around us. This unending flow moves us to “songs of loudest praise”
And the opposite is true of our silence. If we cease praising, then there is some portion (small or large) of God’s mercies that we are have not discovered. This does not mean we are bad. But it does mean that there is always more of God and His mercies to discover.
Finally, both the whisper and the loudest song are nothing more than introductions to a river.
